Introductory Winter Mountaineering/Climbing
This 5-day course commences on each Monday morning and we try to hold an evening brief on the Sunday evening . (If you cannot arrive in time then we can do it on the Sunday morning!) Covering the basic winter skills, from a selection of clothing and equipment, basic navigation, ice axe skills including self arrest on steep snow. Rope work and anchoring and belay skills on snow, ice and rock. Basic snow pack evaluation and avalanche awareness and route choice considerations are also an important part of this course. You will also be climbing gullies and graded mixed climbs.
For mountaineering the guide can take up to four people - we call this a ratio of 1:4 and you will see in the Price section that we can also work on steeper ground with lower guiding ratios so if you are more interested in rope and climbing skills, its safer, more realistic and often a better learning and coaching experience to climb on a 1:2 ratio.
